West Pier Brighton: History, Restoration & What to See in 2026

The West Pier Brighton is one of the most photographed and historically significant structures in the UK. Standing as a skeletal silhouette against the Brighton skyline, these iron ruins are both hauntingly beautiful and deeply fascinating. As West Pier Residence is located directly adjacent to this iconic landmark, we’re proud to share its incredible story.

The History of West Pier Brighton

West Pier was designed by the renowned engineer Eugenius Birch and opened in 1866. It was considered one of the finest examples of Victorian pier architecture in the world. At its peak, the pier attracted over 2 million visitors annually, featuring a concert hall, a theatre, and numerous amusements.

Decline and Fires

The pier was closed to the public in 1975 due to structural deterioration. Despite numerous restoration proposals over the decades, the situation worsened dramatically when two devastating fires struck in 2003, leaving only the skeletal ironwork structure visible today. The fires are believed to have been deliberately started.

The West Pier Today

Despite its ruined state, West Pier remains one of Brighton’s most beloved landmarks. The iron structure hosts one of Europe’s largest colonies of starlings, who perform spectacular murmurations over the pier during autumn and winter evenings — a breathtaking natural spectacle that draws thousands of visitors.

Starling Murmurations at West Pier

Between October and March, hundreds of thousands of starlings roost on the West Pier ruins at dusk, creating mesmerising aerial displays known as murmurations. These natural performances are completely free to watch from the beach and have become one of Brighton’s most celebrated attractions.

The British Airways i360

The British Airways i360, which opened in 2016, was built on the original West Pier entrance and is intended to help fund the eventual restoration of the pier. Designed by the same architects as the London Eye, the i360 rises 162 metres above the seafront and offers stunning views of the ruined pier below.
