Royal Pavilion Brighton: Tickets, History & Visitor Guide 2026

The Royal Pavilion Brighton is one of the most extraordinary and unique buildings in the entire United Kingdom. This lavish royal palace, with its exotic Indian-inspired architecture and opulent interiors, is unlike anything else you’ll find in England. Staying at West Pier Residence, you’re just 15 minutes on foot from this remarkable landmark.

History of the Royal Pavilion

The Royal Pavilion began as a modest farmhouse leased by the Prince of Wales (later George IV) in 1786. Over the following decades, it was transformed by architect John Nash into the extraordinary Indo-Saracenic masterpiece visible today. The palace features distinctive onion domes, minarets, and dragon-motif interiors that blend Indian, Chinese, and Gothic design elements.

The Music Room

The Pavilion’s most spectacular room, the Music Room features a stunning domed ceiling decorated with gilded scallop-shaped panels, enormous lotus-shaped chandeliers, and a Chinese-inspired colour scheme of red, gold, and blue. This is where George IV entertained his most distinguished guests with concerts and performances.

The Banqueting Room

The Banqueting Room is dominated by a magnificent central chandelier weighing over a tonne, held by a silver dragon. The walls are decorated with hand-painted Chinese-style murals, and the table can seat 100 guests for formal dinners. This room epitomises the extraordinary excess of the Regency period.

The Royal Pavilion Gardens

Surrounding the Pavilion are beautifully restored Regency gardens, free to enter and perfect for a peaceful stroll. The gardens feature winding pathways, exotic plant species, and carefully manicured lawns that provide a green oasis in the heart of the city.

Opening Times & Tickets

The Royal Pavilion is open daily throughout the year. Tickets can be purchased online or at the door. Guided tours are available, and audio guides provide detailed information about each room. The gardens are free to enter at any time.
