Eastbourne: An Elegant Day Trip from Brighton
Eastbourne is a delightful day trip destination from Brighton, just 30 minutes east by train. Often characterised as the more genteel neighbour to Brighton’s bohemian character, Eastbourne offers an elegant Victorian seafront, spectacular cliff scenery at Beachy Head and the Seven Sisters, excellent galleries, and a surprisingly vibrant food and arts scene. It’s well worth a day of exploration.
Beachy Head and the Seven Sisters
The dramatic chalk cliffs at Beachy Head, east of Eastbourne, are among the most spectacular natural landscapes in southern England. The Seven Sisters white chalk cliffs stretch along the coastline and provide breathtaking walking with views across the English Channel. This is some of the finest coastal scenery in the UK.
Eastbourne’s Victorian Seafront
Eastbourne’s immaculate Victorian seafront is a classic British seaside experience. The bandstand, the wide promenade, the traditional hotels, and the well-maintained gardens create a beautifully preserved Victorian seaside atmosphere. It’s wonderfully different from Brighton’s buzzing energy.
Towner Eastbourne Gallery
Towner Eastbourne is one of the south east’s leading contemporary art galleries, housing an impressive permanent collection alongside changing exhibitions. The gallery moved to a beautiful purpose-built building in 2009 and regularly hosts major exhibitions of national significance.
South Downs from Eastbourne
The South Downs Way long-distance footpath starts in Eastbourne, making it an excellent jumping-off point for South Downs walking. Day walks from Eastbourne into the Downs offer spectacular views, chalk downland scenery, and a genuine sense of wilderness within reach of the town.
Getting to Eastbourne from Brighton
Eastbourne is 30 minutes from Brighton by direct train. Services run frequently throughout the day. Buses also connect the two towns, and the coastal cycle route provides an exhilarating but challenging bike ride between the cities.
