The South Downs: Brighton’s Natural Backyard
The South Downs National Park begins just minutes from Brighton, creating an extraordinary natural resource on the city’s doorstep. These chalk hills — rolling, wild, and ancient — offer some of the finest walking, cycling, and wildlife watching in southern England, with dramatic views over Brighton and the coast from their ridge tops. Combining city life with South Downs nature is one of Brighton’s unique pleasures.
Getting to the South Downs from Brighton
The South Downs are easily accessible from Brighton. Several bus routes serve downland villages, and cycling and walking routes connect the city directly to the hills. The South Downs Way long-distance path passes through the Downs north of Brighton, accessible via Ditchling Beacon — a regular bus service connects Brighton to the foot of the hill.
Ditchling Beacon
Ditchling Beacon, at 248 metres, is the highest point in East Sussex and one of the most popular viewpoints in the South Downs. On a clear day, the views from the beacon encompass Brighton, the coast, and miles of rolling downland. It’s a landmark used by the Tour de Britain cycle race and loved by walkers and cyclists.
South Downs Wildlife
The South Downs support remarkable biodiversity. Chalk downland wildflowers — including rare orchids, cowslips, and chalk milkwort — create spectacular displays in summer. Skylarks, peregrine falcons, yellowhammers, and numerous butterfly species including the Adonis Blue are characteristic South Downs wildlife. The Downs also support deer, foxes, and other mammals.
South Downs Walking Routes
The range of walking available in the South Downs is enormous, from gentle strolls through chalk valleys to challenging ridge walks of 20 miles or more. The South Downs Way is the principal long-distance route, but numerous shorter circular walks are available from downland car parks and villages accessible from Brighton.
Cycling the South Downs
The South Downs Way is an off-road cycling route as well as a footpath, and the chalk tracks and bridleways of the Downs provide excellent mountain biking terrain. Gravel cycling events regularly take place on the Downs, and several guided cycling operators offer tours from Brighton into the hills.
