The Brighton and Hove Coastal Walk
Brighton and Hove’s coastal path offers one of the most spectacular urban walks in England. Stretching from Brighton Marina in the east through the city centre to Hove and on towards Shoreham-by-Sea in the west, the full coastal walk covers approximately 10 miles of continuous seafront walking with extraordinary views of the English Channel, the city’s architecture, and the chalk coastline. It’s a genuinely world-class urban walking experience.
Starting Point: Brighton Marina
The walk typically begins at Brighton Marina, one of the largest marinas in southern England. The marina’s modern development gives way quickly to the natural chalk cliffs east of the Marina — some of the most dramatic walking on the route. From here, the path follows the cliff top before descending back to sea level near the Palace Pier.
The Central Brighton Seafront
The central Brighton section of the walk passes the most iconic seafront features: the ruined West Pier, the i360 observation tower, Regency Square, and the glorious Regency and Victorian architecture of the central seafront. This section is the most photographically rich and architecturally spectacular part of the walk.
Hove Lawns and the Western Seafront
West of central Brighton, the seafront transitions to the broader promenade of Hove, with wide grassy lawns, beach huts, and the beautiful Brunswick and Adelaide Crescent architecture. The walk continues past Hove Lagoon and on towards Shoreham Harbour and the banks of the River Adur.
Practical Walk Information
The full Brighton to Shoreham coastal walk is approximately 10 miles and takes 3-4 hours at a relaxed pace. The path is flat and well-surfaced throughout. There are cafes, toilets, and rest spots regularly along the route. The walk is suitable for most fitness levels and can be shortened at any point using buses or taxis.

Best Time for the Coastal Walk
The coastal walk is beautiful year-round, but is particularly spectacular in clear winter weather when the light is dramatic and the promenade is quiet. Summer mornings before the crowds arrive are also wonderful. Avoid very windy or stormy days when the seafront can be exposed and unpleasant.
