Chichester: A Cultural Day Trip from Brighton
Chichester, the cathedral city of West Sussex, makes an excellent day trip from Brighton. Just 45 minutes by train west along the coast, Chichester offers a beautifully preserved Roman and medieval city centre, a magnificent cathedral, the nationally acclaimed Pallant House Gallery, and excellent independent shops and restaurants. It’s a wonderfully different experience from Brighton’s dynamic seaside energy.
Chichester Cathedral
Chichester Cathedral is one of England’s finest medieval cathedrals. The Norman and Gothic architecture is beautifully maintained and houses remarkable works of art including a tapestry designed by John Piper and a painting by Marc Chagall. Cathedral tours and events run regularly.
Pallant House Gallery
Pallant House Gallery is widely regarded as one of the finest collections of modern British art outside London. Housed partly in a stunning Queen Anne townhouse and partly in a contemporary extension, its permanent collection includes works by Henry Moore, Graham Sutherland, Frank Auerbach, and Lucian Freud.
Chichester City Centre
Chichester’s four main streets, meeting at the central Market Cross, form one of England’s best-preserved historic city centres. The Roman street plan is clearly visible, and the mixture of medieval, Georgian, and Victorian buildings creates a beautifully harmonious environment. Independent shops, delis, and cafes make it a pleasure to explore.
Chichester Theatre
Chichester Festival Theatre is one of the UK’s most important regional theatres, known for producing work of national significance. Productions regularly transfer to the West End, and visiting while a festival production is running is highly recommended. Book tickets well in advance.
