Rural Sussex from Brighton: Villages, Pubs and Countryside
Brighton’s position at the southern edge of the South Downs places it within easy reach of some of England’s most beautiful rural countryside. The villages, country pubs, and scenic landscapes of the Sussex Weald and South Downs are easily accessible by car, bus, or bicycle from the city, providing a wonderful contrast to Brighton’s urban energy.
Ditchling
The village of Ditchling, nestled beneath the South Downs scarp slope, is one of Sussex’s most beautiful and culturally significant villages. Home to the Eric Gill Arts and Crafts community in the early 20th century, it now has an excellent arts museum, fine independent shops, and a beautiful village church. The ascent of Ditchling Beacon from the village is one of the classic Brighton area walks.
Alfriston
Alfriston in the Cuckmere Valley is arguably the prettiest village in the South Downs. Its half-timbered buildings, ancient church, Star Inn (one of England’s oldest inns), and setting in the beautiful valley make it irresistible. The walk from Alfriston to Cuckmere Haven on the coast is one of the finest short walks in the South Downs.
Amberley
Amberley in West Sussex, with its remarkable castle (now a luxury hotel), thatched cottages, and stunning position overlooking the Arun Valley, is one of England’s most picturesque villages. It’s about 45 minutes from Brighton by car or train via Arundel.
Country Pubs Near Brighton
The Sussex countryside around Brighton has numerous excellent country pubs offering fine ales, locally-sourced pub food, and the quintessential rural English atmosphere. These pubs, some in extraordinary locations with South Downs views, are perfect stops on a rural Sussex drive or walk.
Day Trip Planning
The best rural Sussex day trips from Brighton combine a morning village visit with a country pub lunch and an afternoon walk in the Downs or valley countryside. A car is most convenient for exploring multiple rural destinations, though buses connect several villages to Brighton.
